Cuban institution manages start-up of Air Quality Station

HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 31 (ACN) The Center for Environmental Studies of Cienfuegos (CEAC by its Spanish acronym) is managing the implementation of an Air Quality Station (ECA by its Spanish acronym) at the Provincial Meteorological Center, which will have national repercussions because it will cover the country's capital.

M.Sc. Gleisy Perez Avilleira, head of the initiative, announced the prospects of the facility, in statements quoted by the Nuclear Communicators Network (REDNUC), after concluding in 2024 the evaluation of local emissions from the industrial zone of Cienfuegos in the city's air quality, according to Cuban regulations (NC 1020: 2014).

She added that it will include the monitoring of particulate matter at the Station located at the Center for Information Management and Energy Development (CUBAENERGIA), in Havana, among other results.

Perez Avilleira pointed out that as a whole, the actions are part of the project called Strengthening of national capacities for the monitoring, evaluation and management of air quality (particulate matter and gases), the evaluation of its impact on human health and ecosystems, using nuclear and isotopic techniques, known by the acronym TINAIR.

The latter is led by CEAC researchers, has national scope and is funded by the Agency for Nuclear Energy and Advanced Technologies (AENTA), whose objective is aimed at strengthening the nation's capabilities for monitoring, evaluation and management of air quality.
It also responds to the National Economic and Social Development Plan until 2030, the State Plan for Addressing Climate Change (Task Life) and the UN Sustainable Development Goals to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages; as well as to make cities more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

AENTA is one of the three agencies of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, together with those of Environment and Social and Humanistic Sciences.
