Havana, March 20 (ACN) Over one hundred ranchers and forest workers are still fighting a large-scale blaze that broke out Tuesday in the western Pinar del Rio locality known as Torre Vieja, municipality of San Juan y Martinez.
The blaze has thus far damaged some 350 hectares of pine trees, according to local reports citing the head of the Pinar del Rio Rangers Corps, Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Pereda, as saying that actions aim and reducing volatile materials and cutting the advancement of the fire particularly to the northern areas, because southern sections are well under control.
Pereda said that the local topography, inaccessible roads and strong winds have hindered firefighting activity.
Torre Vieja is located at just 25 kilometers from the town of San Juan y Martinez. The area was also affected by a large-scale forest fire some five years ago.
