Cuban province boosts installation of solar parks for fuel savings

SANTA CLARA, Cuba, Mar 18 (ACN) In the area destined for the construction of the future photovoltaic solar park (PSF by its Spanish acronym) of Calabazar de Sagua, a rural community located in the municipality of Encrucijada in the central province of Villaclara, work is already progressing on the construction of the platform of this work which, after its connection to the National Electric System (SEN), will save the country more than 8,000 tons of fuel per year.

This is the sixth of the nine medium-sized sites that the geographic power plant intends to open before 2030 with the firm purpose of contributing to the effective change of the country's energy matrix.

Nelson Luis Vila Hernandez, main contractor, told the press that earthworks are currently being completed within the perimeter of the station, whose estimated power of almost 22 megawatts will not only contribute to supply the residential sector of Encrucijada, but also to reduce the consumption of imported crude oil and to protect the environment.

The generation of non-polluting electricity, such as this one that basically depends on the sun's radiation, is one of the most effective alternatives to boost the nation's economic development without failing to comply with the protocols for the conservation of the natural environment, especially in times when it is increasingly urged to promote social progress based on the ecological industry, said Osvaldo Rodriguez Echevarria, top authority of the Integral Projects Directorate in the province.

This project, he said, derives from the Cuban government's interest in offsetting the archipelago's energy deficit, which is also conditioned by the negative impact of the economic blockade imposed by the United States.

Subject to the sustainable development objectives contained in the 2020-2030 Agenda, the Republic of Cuba maintains its firm intention to transform the country's energy matrix through the preferred use of renewable energy sources and the gradual eradication of the use of highly polluting fossil fuels.
