Cuba Drinking Water System Expands Use of Solar Energy Pumps

Havana, Feb 27 (ACN) The Cuban potable water system is increasingly using solar energy water pumps as part of the country’s program to progressively change the national energy matrix.

According to Bladimir Matos, first vice-president of the Cuban Water Resources Institute, the water supply service is the second largest consumer of electricity in the country—over 600 gigawatts-hour a year—so he suggest progressive reduction of such consumption to help recover the national power system.

Engineer Alain Nkumu said that the initiative has benefitted over 375 thousand people in several communities of the country after the installation of 732 solar water pumps.

Nkumu explained that the program has been funded with over 23 million dollars and as initial results some 9.8 gigawatts/hour were saved in 2024.
