Cuba salutes Kim Jong Il’s birthday

HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 16 (ACN) In a post on X, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla wished North Korean leader Kim Jong Il a happy 83rd birthday in a congratulatory message to the party, government and people of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

"We always remember [Kim Jong Il’s] efforts to strengthening the ties of friendship between the DPRK and Cuba", the official wrote.

Kim Jong Il was born on February 16, 1942, a date that the DPRK consecrated as the Day of the Light Star in recognition of his contributions to national independence and sovereignty.

Havana and Pyongyang established diplomatic relations on August 29, 1960, by decision of their historic leaders, Fidel Castro and Kim Il Sung and, since then, Cuba and the DPRK maintain close cooperation relations and share common views on international affairs, including Pyongyang's condemnation of the 60-plus year-old U.S. blockade of Cuba.
