PINAR DEL RIO, Cuba, Jan 17 (ACN) Young students and workers from different sectors will reenact today the entrance of the Caravan of Freedom in 1959, after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution.
According to Leyanis Carmona Diaz, first secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Young Communist League, 66 residents of Pinar del Rio will travel the same route of the "barbudos", from the municipality of Los Palacios to the intersection of Jose Marti Street and Rafael Ferro Avenue, in the capital city.
In the latter place, 66 years ago, Fidel Castro spoke for the first time to the people on a dredge that became a tribune.
At approximately 8:20 p.m. and for more than two hours, he explained to them the measures of the Revolutionary Government to fulfill the Moncada program, denied the slander of the foreign press aimed at discrediting the nascent social project and expressed his desire to act to lift the region out of misery and neglect.
I had not come to Pinar del Rio because I had to stay in Havana for several days. Such was the revolutionary fervor of this province, (...) that during the trip between Oriente and Havana I received insinuations from numerous comrades, asking me to come to Pinar del Río before arriving in Havana, he said on that occasion.
It was not possible, however, to stop the march of the whole column to make a detour through the province, and I replied to those comrades: "Don't worry, we have not forgotten Pinar del Río, we will go to Pinar del Río", he said at that time.
