66 years later, the caravan returns to Ciudad Libertad

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 8 (ACN) Enthusiasm and cheerfulness marked the arrival of the Freedom Caravan in Ciudad Escolar Libertad, formerly the Columbia Military Camp, in a reenactment of what happened more than six decades ago.

Attending the commemoration were some of the original protagonists of the heroic deed, including Brigadier General Delsa Esther (Tete) Puebla, heroine of the Republic of Cuba, and José Ramón Monteagudo Ruiz, head of the Agri-food Division of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, as well as local party and government leaders.

Raul Alejandro Palmero Fernandez, first secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Young Communist League in Havana, recalled in his speech the events of January 8, 1959 and their impact on Cuban history, and urged young people and society in general to preserve the country’s achievements and keep playing their heroic role to protect the revolutionary process.

“This generation, like that at the time of the Apostle's centenary, will be alongside Fidel in his journey towards immortality on the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of the leader of the Cuban Revolution in 2026”, he stressed.
With shouts of "Nobody surrenders here!" and other patriotic phrases, those present ratified their commitment to the Homeland and the socialist project.

The gathering at Ciudad Libertad was the end of the journey of a caravan that every year reenacts the transcendental events of the day in 1959 when Cuba showed the world its strength with the commencement of a triumphant Revolution.

Havana witnessed once again the victory of ideas and the unity of the people, noticeable among not only the young caravanistas but also the population that awaited its passage through the streets of the capital city.
