Nearly 8 million users access mobile telephony in Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 7 (ACN) Almost 8 million users (7,949,480) have access to mobile telephony in Cuba, according to figures provided by Mayra Arevich Marin, Cuban Minister of Communications at the recent National Assembly of People's Power (ANPP), with an increase of 282,167 new customers.

The minister informed that 94.04 % of this figure is connected to the Internet, and in 2024 they increased by 2,040 homes with connectivity to the network, for a total of 283,398 throughout the country.

In the year that recently concluded, they expanded 4G network access capacities and also grew in international connectivity with an average monthly Internet consumption of 9.9 Gigabytes of mobile data.

Averich Marin said that the digital transformation on the island is a transversal issue in society and the policy in this regard conceives as part of that transformation the strategy for the development of artificial intelligence.

She said that 263 digital government portals are maintained on the Internet, of the 328 procedures identified for natural persons, 140 have some level of computerization, and that the purpose is to expand the supply of digital procedures, focusing on simplification, integration, administrative management and its corresponding computerization.

The minister announced that the new digital government platform CubaGob will be launched under the name of Soberania, in order to strengthen the identity of the project, transparency in public management, evoke the notion of autonomy and national development, as well as the people's authority over government management processes, promoting their participation in the formulation of policies and decision-making.

In the Cuban Parliament, the head of Communications warned about the importance of cybersecurity at all levels, and the need to carry out monitoring and diagnostic actions to ensure the security of processes.

A fundamental issue in the digital transformation is bankarization, and although they advanced a lot, it is necessary to work with organization and greater demand from local governments, they cannot allow refusals to use platforms to make digital payments in stores, she reaffirmed.
