Cuba to host international conference on the country’s current challenges

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, Jan 5 (ACN) The XVIII International Colloquium Joel James In Memoriam, to be held as usual on January 10 to 13, will be dedicated to the challenges facing today's Cuba.

According to Orlando Vergés, chair of the Organizing Committee, the event is an opportunity to reflect on today's Cuba from a cultural viewpoint and to learn about and discuss the work of the outstanding intellectual, writer and founder of the Casa del Caribe and the Fiesta del Fuego.

A reference for scholars of traditional popular culture, James' thoughts provides guidelines for the analysis of the national situation based on the observation of certain directions observed in the country which can explain or teach about various ongoing phenomenons, including politics, economy, cultural industries, generational coexistence, and migration, among others.

Mr. Vergés also remarked that Cuban researchers should always focus their attention on the island’s contemporary realities.

The event will feature book launches, dance performances, ceremonies, exhibitions, panels on the 510th anniversary of the town of Santiago de Cuba, tributes to Cuban poets, and the presentation of the José María Heredia plaque, as well as the reading of the Letter of the Year.
