Cuba Gradually Restores Power System after Grid Collapse

Havana, Dec 4 (ACN) Electric company workers have been restlessly working on Wednesday to restore the national grid after it collapsed in early hours due to a failure in a major power plant.

The Cuban Energy and Mines Ministry reported on X that several electric microsystems have been generating power in different parts of the country while actions are underway to bring the national grid back on its feet.

A similar grid collapse occurred in October and later in November as a consequence of the impact of Hurricane Rafael on western Cuba. But the current conditions are more favorable than in those previous occasions to restore the power system, said Energy Minister Vicente de la O Levy.

An automatic disconnection from the grid by the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant-- the major and more efficient plant of its kind in the country-- located in western Matanzas province, caused the collapse at 2:08 am Wednesday morning, Cuban local time.
