International project boosts renewable energy use in eastern Cuba

HOLGUÍN, Cuba, Nov 13 (ACN) As part of the government's development priorities, new actions of the international project FORMER-Cuba (Enhancing Women’s Leadership and Participation in Cuba’s Renewable Energy Sector) extend the use of renewable energy in the province of Holguin through the installation of solar panels and water heaters in health, science and service institutions, which helps reduce consumption of fossil fuels.

Geovanny Zaldívar Martínez, regional deputy director of Environment, said that the devices provided by the project optimize the processes in hospitals and daycare centers of rural and hard-to-reach communities across the province, in addition to the teaching aids donated to facilitate training in the assembly of panels, hydroelectric and biogas treatment plants.

Established in 2020 and funded by Canada, FORMER-Cuba was implemented in the island to promote a 24% change in the energy matrix, in line with the country’s development goals until 2030.
