HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 12 (ACN) After taking some measurements for the study of the current depth of the access channel to the western port of Batabano, work will be carried out today to prepare the dredging project for the areas whose depths were modified by the accumulation of sediments due to the passage of Hurricane Rafael.
According to the Minister of Transportation, Eduardo Rodriguez Davila, actions are being coordinated to move to Batabano the necessary equipment to carry out the dredging.
The minister detailed on his official Facebook page that on Monday divers and specialists from Geocuba's Marine Studies Company took measurements to study the current depth of the port's access channel, after difficulties arose in the maneuvering of the ferry Perseverancia (Nueva Gerona - Batabano) on its first trip after the storm.
For this reason, navigation of the ferry was suspended until further notice, and it was announced that an accurate bathymetry of the channel will be carried out to determine the extent of the sediment accumulation on the bottom.
It was reported that the rest of the cargo vessels operating on that route have no difficulties and will continue to sail.
The Perseverancia ferry, equipped to carry 430 passengers and rolling cargo such as vehicles, is the main vessel for the transportation of goods and population between the large island of the Cuban archipelago and the special municipality of Isle of Youth.
