Eastern Cuba reinforces preventive measures to face threat of tropical storm Rafael

 BAYAMO, Cuba, Nov 5 (ACN) The member of the Provincial Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba in Granma, Tania Heredia de la Guardia, urged in this city, to maintain vigilance and promptly fulfill the tasks of preparation in the face of the threat of tropical storm Rafael.

In a video conference of the Territorial Defense Council with its corresponding organizations in the 13 municipalities, the director of the Provincial Meteorological Center, Marcelo Cid Zayas, warned about the potential danger that this cyclonic organism still represents for the region, which, according to forecasts, could intensify into a hurricane in the next few hours.

Cid Zayas highlighted the unpredictable character of the atmospheric system, especially in terms of its trajectory, and warned about the probable occurrence of heavy rains in the province starting this Tuesday afternoon.

The expert also emphasized the importance of maintaining a constant follow-up of the meteorological situation, and assured that the necessary technology is available for this purpose; an essential aspect in making timely and accurate decisions.

Consequently, the detailed analysis of low and flood-prone areas continues, and until yesterday more than a hundred residents in risk areas of the municipality of Cauto Cristo were protected at the Campus II of the University of Granma, in Bayamo; while a higher number of people, from towns such as Guisa, are self-evacuating in the homes of relatives, neighbors and friends.

Marbelis Campos Busquets, delegate of Hydraulic Resources in the territory, informed that the situation of the reservoirs remains stable, with maximum accumulations of 5 millimeters during the last 24 hours.

The general conditions indicate that the dams are in optimal conditions to receive possible rains and runoff associated with the effects of tropical storm Rafael, she added.
