Cuba at the UN: “The blockade causes suffering to the Cuban people”

 

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 30 (ACN) “The only goal of the U.S. economic, commercial and financial blockade is to cause more suffering to the Cuban people and to intensify the economic war to make the economy collapse”, said Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, Cuba's permanent representative to the United Nations (UN).

Following Cuba’s overwhelming victory in the voting on the resolution “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba” —187 in favor and two against (United States and Israel), with 1 abstention (Moldova)—Soberón Guzmán stressed at the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) that the U.S. government, displaying its cynicism, holds Cuba responsible for the impact of the stifling economic siege it has kept in place for more than six decades.

“We have not heard a single word from the U.S. representative about the absurd unilateral designation of Cuba as a country that allegedly sponsors terrorism, an arbitrary decision rejected by the international community at the UNGA these days”, he remarked.

In addition, he underscored that millions of dollars from USAID funds are used shamelessly to fuel subversion in the island, as are the remittances that Cuban émigrés send to their families and the modest donations that some NGOs collect to help Cuba, not without overcoming countless blockade-related obstacles, as the imperialist government presents itself as a benefactor of the Cuban people and claims to be a trading partner while banning USD transactions and punishing any nation that imports articles containing more than 10% of U.S. components or exports to the U.S. products made with Cuban raw materials.

“If the U.S. government really cared about Cuba's welfare and respected democracy, it would listen to the majority of its citizens who support the end of the blockade, which is a massive and systematic flagrant violation of human rights”, added the Cuban official who, by way of conclusion, thanked all the states that voted in favor of the island’s draft resolution against the said illegal policy.
