HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 22 (ACN) The People's Forum has published today a letter in The New York Times demanding that Joe Biden, president of the United States, reverse the harsh policies of his predecessor, Donald Trump, during his last 90 days in office.
On X, the organization pointed out that this open letter is published while Cuba is simultaneously facing a serious energy crisis and a hurricane.
“Today, we published a letter in @nytimes to @JoeBiden, demanding he overturn @realDonaldTrump's harsh Cuba policy during his final 90 days in office while #Cuba is simultaneously experiencing a severe energy crisis & a hurricane. #LetCubaLive”
The document recalls that 10 years ago, President Barack Obama took the first steps towards a normalization of relations with the island. However, when Trump took office, he immediately removed that policy.
As a consequence, the letter added, Cuba is currently suffering a national blackout, worsened by the cruel US policy that has lasted 60 years and has cost the country more than 164 billion dollars in damages, with more than 5 billion dollars in losses only in the last year (March 2023 to February 2024).
Likewise, the open letter highlights that Trump's designation of Cuba as a “state sponsor of terrorism” and the imposition of more than 243 new sanctions on the island represents an injustice designed to create severe shortages, making it impossible for the Cuban people to access essential food, medicine and fuel.
It further implores Biden, who has maintained Trump's policy for three years and nine months and urges him to lift those measures with just 90 days left in his presidential term.
“It's not too late to do the right thing. You can change this reality with a simple signature. It is time to act. Let Cuba live!” the text concluded.
