Cuban authorities define strategies to restore electric power system

 HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 22 (ACN) Felix Estrada Rodriguez, head of the National Charge Office of the Electric Power Corporation, explained the actions to be implemented to achieve the total reconnection of the National Electric System (SEN) when he participated in the Mesa Redonda program.

The specialist reviewed the events of the last few days and the lessons learned, applied in order to continue with the work to reduce the risks of a possible failure that could cause a new disconnection.

Estrada Rodriguez considered that the procedure of strengthening generation in regional micro-systems before interconnecting them to avoid imbalances that could lead to a reversal of the progress made, while he recalled that, although in some areas electricity coverage has improved substantially, it is still too early to speak of a reestablished SEN.

He highlighted the consolidation achieved in the western region with the incorporation of the Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE by its Spanish acronym), in Matanzas, and the possible entry of Mariel Unit 5, which strengthens this system and opens the possibility of distributing more coverage to the province of Pinar del Rio, which continues to be the most delayed in this regard.

He specified that this distribution should be carried out with the necessary care and progressiveness in view of the instability of the system which, although it is strengthened, is susceptible to fail due to slight disturbances.

Regarding the center-east of the country, he pointed out the possible entry in the next few hours of the thermoelectric plants Lidio Ramon Perez, of Felton, and Rente, to increase the generation in the region, which is still somewhat low in the eastern part of the country.

He pointed out that if this is achieved, it will be possible to incorporate the microsystem to the central system and unify the system in the area, which would bring us one step closer to the restoration of the SEN, although it is complex to operate the circuits in this way, which entails the measurement of fundamental parameters and to move safely and without haste.

In the current conditions there is a level of generation close to 1300 megawatts in the whole country, which according to optimistic forecasts could indicate the proximity of the total restoration of the service, with today, Tuesday, crucial to get closer to that goal, the executive concluded.
