Havana, Oct 21 (ACN) Tropical storm Oscar left Cuba on Monday evening after claiming six lives in the municipality of San Antonio del Sur, in the easternmost province of Guantanamo, according to preliminary assessment of the damage.
The information was released by the head of the Ops Department with the National Civil Defense Staff, Colonel Argenis Perales, during the “Mesa Redonda” prime-time TV show Monday evening as the storm was leaving the northeastern Cuban coast.
The officer rescue actions were underway in San Antonio del Sur by members of the armed forces, the Interior Ministry and the Red Cross, as measures to protect the local population were in place.
Perales said that local government authorities were assessing the damage inflicted by the storm, while aid teams were taking care of the people. He added that during the strong passage of the storm, all emergency and radio amateur network were active despite the difficult energy scenario facing the country.
The officer stressed the high preparedness of the command centers, the unity of government and political officials and the active participation of the people in the protection of human lives and property.
