Cubans Recall Historic 1957 People Uprisal in Central Cuba

 Havana, Sept 5 (ACN) Cubans marked on Thursday the 67th anniversary of the people’s armed uprisal in the south-central city of Cienfuegos which took control of the urban center for 24 hours, against the army of the Bastista tyranny that ruled the country.

Cuban Parliament president Esteban Lazo stressed the historic event by recalling remarks by the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, as he said that the Cienfuegos uprisal was an extraordinary moral encouragement for the guerrilla fighters struggling at the eastern Sierra Maestra mountain range at that time.

Cuban Communist Party Organization secretary Roberto Morales wrote on X a message paying homage to the heroes and martyrs of the Cienfuegos event, which he described as one of the most glorious pages in the struggle against the Batista dictatorship.

“We commemorate the 67th anniversary of the armed uprisal in Cienfuegos, a heroic action against the Batista dictatorship led by members of the July 26 Movement, officers and sailors with the Cuban navy at the command of today’s Commander Julio Camacho Aguilera,” reads an X message by Cuban vice-president Salvador Valdes.

On September 5th, 1957, at about 5:20 am the armed action broke out in Cienfuegos as the combatants kept hold of the city for 24 hours, till dictator Fulgencio Batista’s troops bombed and machine-gunned neighborhoods causing killing dozens of people and injuring many citizens.lc
