HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 25 (ACN) In a post on X, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez wished Brazilian Dominican friar Frei Betto a happy 80th birthday.
“From Cuba, where you are admired and loved for your contribution to the understanding of Church-State relations with your book Fidel and Religion, as well as for your permanent support for the Socialist Revolution and social justice, we wish you a happy birthday,” the president wrote.
Carlos Alberto Libanio Christo, a.k.a. Frei Betto (Belo Horizonte, 1944), author of some 60 books, is one of the greatest figures of the liberation theology and a steady supporter of liberation movements in Latin America. He has also been an advisor to social movements, the Basic Ecclesial Communities, and the Landless Rural Workers Movement, and plays a key role in the political life of Brazil.
Among other awards, Frei Betto has earned the Juca Pato prize for his book Fidel y la religion, the Solidarity Medal of the Government of Cuba, the Paulo Freire Trophy for Social Commitment conferred by the Brazilian Psychology Councils, and the ALBA de las Letras prize in recognition of his literary work.
