Havana, May 10 (ACN) Cuba’s deputy foreign minister Anayansi Rodriguez laid a wreath at the bust of former South African president and leader Nelson Mandela in Havana, in the eve of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between South Africa and Cuba.
The occasion was appropriate to recall the moment when Nelson Mandela and Fidel Castro formalized diplomatic relations on May 11, 1994, the Cuban Foreign Ministry reported on its website.
A document read at the ceremony stressed ongoing links in the area of healthcare, education, infrastructure, water resources and others. Participants also recalled the historic stance of South Africa in support of Cuba’s struggle against the over-60-year US economic, commercial and financial blockade of the Cuban people.
The Cuban government official was accompanied by South Africa’s ambassador Ivonne Nkwenkwezi Phosa. Attending the ceremony were members of the diplomatic community in Havana and officials with the Cuba Foreign Ministry.
