Cuba Starts to Use Solar Energy-fueled Water Pumps

Havana, April 9 (ACN) As part of a national strategy to increase the use of renewable energy, a project to progressively install water pumping systems based on solar panels will improve the water service to some 400 thousand Cubans in different localities.

The project will replace 37.4 percent of current water pumping systems hooked to the power grid, which will reduce the consumption of some 15 gigawatts a year, standing for important savings.

The initiative will benefit communities with no more than one thousand inhabitants, where drinking water needs can be met with 10-litter-per-second capacity pumps, said Julio Cesar Rodriguez, official with the Water Resources Office in western Pinar del Rio province, one of the territories implementing the project.
