HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 25 (ACN) In a message posted on X, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel described February 24, 1895 as a day of patriotic worship of those who started the Necessary War, organized by National Hero José Martí “to prevent, by the independence of Cuba, the United States from spreading over the West Indies and falling, with that added weight, upon other lands of Our America”.
On their end, Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz remarked that the historic date “gave continuity to the struggles for independence leading up to the victory of January 1959 and reaffirmed our firm conviction to defend the principles and sovereignty of the Homeland”, whereas Politburo member Roberto Morales Ojeda, Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee of the Party, recalled that Cuba is paying homage to the Father of the Homeland Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, whose resolve and self-sacrifice paved the way followed by Martí on February 24, Fidel on July 26, and the Cuban people today.
Known as the War of Independence or the Necessary War and joined by veterans of the war of 1968, the uprising of February 24, 1895—the last against the Spanish empire—ended in August 1898 with the U.S. intervention in the conflict.
