Bayamo, Feb 22 (ACN) Cubans from all walks of life in this eastern city will pay tribute to the Father of the Cuban Homeland Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, on the occasion of the 150th year of his death in combat.
The tribute will start Sunday at the patriot’s birth place, now turned into a museum. The program includes sessions and lectures on Cuban history, audiovisuals and traditions related to Cuban cuisine, music and chess meets.
Museum director Javier Vega gave details about activities for the occasion like a symbolic flag ceremony at the Revolution Square in Bayamo, and school morning meetings on February 27, which is the date of his death in action.
The first President of the Republic of Cuba in Arms and leader of the first independence war against the Spanish crown was born in Bayamo, on April 18, 1819.
He had not yet turned 55 when he was killed in action in an unequal battle against the Spanish army on February 27, 1874.
