New Communist Party Leader Appointed in Santiago de Cuba



 Havana, Feb 1 (ACN) In a plenary session Thursday the provincial committee of the Communist Party in eastern Santiago de Cuba province agreed to replace Jose Ramon Monteagudo as first secretary of the political organization and appoint Beatriz Johnson for that office.

The decision at the request of the Cuban Communist Party Politburo appointed Johnson who is a member of the Central Committee and the Council of State and previously was governor of Santiago de Cuba.

Jonhson, 54, is a chemical engineer who has developed different responsibilities in several enterprises here particularly in the cement production activity. She also carried out government activities at provincial level.

The Communist Party plenary session was presided over by the first secretary of the Cuban political organization Miguel Diaz-Canel, also Cuban President, and Organization Secretary Roberto Morales. Provincial party officials acknowledged the work carried out by the former secretary Jose Ramon Monteagudo and his contribution to the unity of political leaders and the people to face social, economic and political challenges. Monteagudo will now join tasks at the Secretariat of the Communist Party Central Committee.
