Cuba starts its judicial year 2024

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 16 (ACN) The judicial year 2024 started today in a solemn ceremony held at the headquarters of the People's Supreme Court (TSP by its Spanish acronym) with the presence of Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic.

Ruben Remigio Ferro, president of the highest judicial body of the island, said in his opening remarks that the accurate and effective fulfillment of the principle of imparting justice is key for the necessary atmosphere of order, legality and harmony in social relations to prevail in the community.

He emphasized that the result of this work has an impact on the quality of life of the population and is one of the essential components in the materialization of the rule of law and social justice proclaimed in the first article of the Constitution of the Republic.

As a result of the approval of the Magna Carta in 2019, he pointed out the demands, challenges and goals set to accompany the profound legal reform promoted, which has demanded a lot of preparation and learning to keep up with new provisions such as the Family and Criminal Codes, as well as the Criminal Procedure Law, rules that have significantly marked the judicial activity in the country.

To such effects, Remigio Ferro referred that in 2023 the courts of justice managed to process and conclude 113,986 cases, which is equivalent to 87.6 % of the total to be processed and 49,932 final sentences had to be executed, of which 44,609 were complied with, for 89.3 %.

It will not be easy to achieve all the objectives and strategies outlined in the midst of the difficulties and obstacles along the way; but, to do so, in the People's Courts System, which recently completed half a century of being founded, there is plenty of revolutionary enthusiasm, strength of spirit, sense of responsibility and commitment to the people, to whom we owe ourselves, he added.

The ceremony was also headed by members of the Political Bureau of the Party's Central Committee Esteban Lazo Hernandez, president of the National Assembly of People's Power and the Council of State, Manuel Marrero Cruz, Prime Minister, Roberto Morales Ojeda, Secretary of Organization of the Party, and Ruben Remigio Ferro, president of the TSP.

Yamila Peña Ojeda, Attorney General of the Republic, Oscar Manuel Silvera Martinez, Minister of Justice, along with authorities of the Party, the Government and the legal sector, specialists and judges of the People's and military courts and members of the highest judicial body of the island, among other guests, were also present.
