Cuba remembers Julio Antonio Mella 95 years after his death

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 10 (ACN) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel recalled today the legacy of the young revolutionary Julio Antonio Mella and his last words, “I die for the Revolution!”, when he was about to be assassinated in Mexico on January 10, 1929.

“Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro referred to Mella as ‘the Cuban who most did in less time’,” Díaz-Canel remarked.

On their end, Esteban Lazo Hernández, president of the National Assembly of People's Power, and Cuban VP Salvador Valdés Mesa, described Mella—founder of the Anti-Imperialist League of Cuba and co-founder of the country’s first Marxist-Leninist Party—as the most worthy of Cuba's sons and a paradigm for new generations.

Mella was assassinated, by orders of the dictator Gerardo Machado, as he walked with his partner Tina Modotti on January 10, 1929, just two months before his 26th birthday and while he was preparing an expedition to Cuba, where he would join the armed struggle.

His ashes were brought to Havana on September 29, 1933 and, since 1976, they have rested in the monument built in his name across the street from the University of Havana.
