Cuba marks 13th anniversary of the country's youngest provinces

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 9 (ACN) Many congratulations to the people of Artemisa and Mayabeque, young provinces celebrating the 13th anniversary of their constitution, Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz said today.

On X, the Cuban head of government urged the inhabitants and authorities of these western territories to continue working to raise their economic and social development.
On the occasion of the date, Gladys Martinez Verdecia, first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) in Artemisa, expressed her commitment to continue advancing in the province.

For her part, Yuniasky Crespo Vaquero, first secretary of the PCC in Mayabeque, congratulated the people of the young province.

In August 2010, the National Assembly of People's Power approved amendments to the Law on Political-Administrative Division, in force since July 1976, for the creation of the provinces of Mayabeque and Artemisa, mainly located in Havana.

These territories were officially constituted on January 9, 2011, and from that moment on, the country was divided into 15 provinces and 168 municipalities, including the Isle of Youth.

Artemisa includes the districts of Caimito, Guanajay, Mariel, San Antonio de los Baños, Güira de Melena, Alquizar and Bauta, as well as Bahia Honda, Candelaria and San Cristobal, formerly belonging to Pinar del Rio, while the capital of this province is the city that gives its name to the territory.

Mayabeque, on the other hand, has its capital in the city of San Jose de las Lajas and is made up of the municipalities of Santa Cruz del Norte, Jaruco, Madruga, Nueva Paz, San Nicolas, Güines, Melena del Sur, Batabano, Quivican and Bejucal.
