Ministry of Higher Education celebrates 296th birthday of University of Havana

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 5 (ACN) Cuban Ministry of Higher Education (MES by its Spanish acronym) celebrated today, on X, the 296th birthday of the University of Havana (UH).

The UH is 296 years old and has been contributing to the country's development, said the MES in its congratulatory message to the university community, shared on the social network by Walter Baluja Garcia, Cuban Minister of Higher Education.

The ministry recalled that the UH is Cuba's oldest higher education institution and that its walls preserve a large part of the country's history.

"Happy birthday to our UH: complex, diverse, creative and committed to its 296 years, said Reynaldo Velazquez Zaldivar, deputy minister of Higher Education.

The former Royal and Pontifical University of San Geronimo de La Habana was founded in 1728 by Dominican friars belonging to the Order of Preachers and is the oldest university in Cuba.

The center is attached to the MES and was declared a National Monument by Resolution 03 of October 10, 1978. It has 19 faculties with 35 degrees in Economic Sciences and Accounting, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and Social and Humanistic Sciences.
