HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 3 (ACN) The Ministry of the Interior reported that the first operation to return irregular migrants to Cuba in 2024 was carried out on Tuesday, a total of 56 people that the U.S. Coast Guard returned to their native country.
They are 48 men and eight women, mostly from the western province of Matanzas, who had participated in three illegal exits from the country and were intercepted at sea.
Five of the returnees were transferred to the investigative body as alleged perpetrators of serious criminal acts that were being investigated prior to their involvement in the illegal departure or as a result of that action.
Cuban authorities remain firm in their commitment to safe and orderly migration, while reiterating the danger and life-threatening conditions posed by illegal departures from the country by sea, the statement reads.
The last operation of this type in 2023 took place last December 29. The agency reported then that there were a total of 132 returns with 5,253 people returned in 2023 by air and sea from different countries in the region.
