Diaz-Canel urges to increase food production in Cuban eastern province

HOLGUIN, Cuba, Oct 20 (ACN) Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the republic, checked the implementation of the Food Sovereignty Law in the municipality of Cacocum, as part of the government's visit to Holguin.

This predominantly agricultural territory, located south of the provincial capital, requires about 1,000 tons of viands, vegetables, greens, grains, fruits and oilseeds for self-consumption, a figure that has not yet been reached with a considerable deficit in fiber.

The Cuban President emphasized the need to increase the supply of food at a good price and with quality, which at the same time are healthy, so it is necessary to focus productive plans on this purpose, enhancing self-sufficiency at the local level.

He emphasized that this problem must be analyzed efficiently because in the world context food prices have increased, especially for grains such as beans and wheat.

He also stressed that efficiency is essential through the generalization of good experiences in milk and meat production, which are still insufficient to meet the nutritional demands of the population.

Cuban leader pointed out the relevance of maintaining energy saving measures, including the transportation of the basic food basket and various crops through ferrobuses, which will allow greater availability of fuel for electricity generation.

Among the experiences presented during the meeting, the education sector stands out, where there are three self-consumption farms linked to short-cycle crops to feed students and teachers.
