Cuba reiterates people's right to adequate food

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 16 (ACN) Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, Cuban foreign minister, reiterated today the right of all people to have regular, permanent and free access to adequate and sufficient food.

On the occasion of World Food Day, the foreign minister noted on the social network X that according to the United Nations, the number of hungry people in the world has risen to 735 million.

The date has been celebrated since 1979 promoted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with the aim of reducing hunger in the world, a purpose also sought by the 2030 Agenda with its goal of zero hunger.

This year's theme is "Water is life, water is food. Leave no one behind" in order to highlight the importance of water resources for the life of living beings on the planet.

Approximately 71 % of the planet's surface is covered by water, yet only 2.5% is fresh and suitable for drinking, agriculture and most industrial uses.

Data indicate that factors such as population growth, urbanization, economic development and climate change are putting increasing pressure on the planet's water resources, so that in recent decades, the amount of freshwater available per person has decreased by 20 percent.

Global organizations are calling for responsible water management, ensuring equitable distribution of the resource and preserving aquatic food systems.
