HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 18 (ACN) Miguel Diaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, recalled today the trip to the cosmos of Cuban Arnaldo Tamayo Mendez, the first Latin American to fly into space.
On a day like today, socialist Cuba sent a young mestizo from Guantanamo to explore the cosmos. It was not a miracle, but cooperation between nations, declared the president on X.
On the occasion of the date, Diaz-Canel recalled the phrase of Argentine Antonio Cafiero: "He who dreams alone, dreams alone, he who dreams with others makes history".
The Hero of the Republic of Cuba and Gold Star Hero of the Soviet Union, Arnaldo Tamayo Mendez, was born in 1942 in the eastern province of Guantanamo.
During 1978 he was selected to join the Intercosmos Program and moved to the Star Village in the Soviet Union to complete his training.
Tamayo Mendez took off on September 18, 1980 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome with Soviet engineer Yuri Romanenko.
