What are Cuba's achievements so far at the head of the G77?

HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 18 (ACN) Nine months after assuming the pro tempore presidency of the Group of 77 (G77) and China, Cuba boasts among the main achievements of its management the successful holding of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the mechanism, after 18 years without holding a meeting at the highest level.

This was stated by Rodolfo Benitez Verson, General Director of Multilateral Affairs and International Law of the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, adding that one of the results of the meeting in Havana, on September 15 and 16, has undoubtedly been the strengthening of the Group's unity and its capacity for coordination.

In an interview published on the website of the Presidency of Cuba, the diplomat considered that under the leadership of the Caribbean Island, the G77 and China have achieved positive results that have been widely recognized both by the membership of the group and by different international actors with which it interacts.

I believe that the G77 is now in a better position to effectively face the main international processes underway, in which our Group is a major player, he stressed.

In making an assessment of Cuba's management, Benitez Verson assured that it has been very active and innovative, and that the commitments assumed upon receiving the Presidency in January this year are being fulfilled.

In spite of its diversity, he considered that under Cuba's leadership the Group has remained united in the different multilateral processes in which it has participated, which has not only allowed the voice of the G77 to be heard, but also to be duly taken into account in decision-making.
It is essential to mention that under the Cuban presidency important results have been achieved in different multilateral negotiation processes, the executive told the presidential press team, and explained that this is the main role of the Group: to promote the legitimate interests and positions of the countries of the South in the consultations and negotiations held at the United Nations.

Cuba has also represented the G77 in several relevant international events and defended its positions during the course of this year, the diplomat stressed.

In this regard, he added, the Cuban President has personally participated and promoted the interests, positions and proposals of the Group in international meetings outside the framework of the United Nations and the traditional scope of action of the G77.

Until January 2024 (when Uganda will assume the post), Cuba will not cease in its efforts to boost the creative potential, influence and leadership of the G77 in the international sphere, the Cuban official said, and assured that his country will continue to defend the interests of the countries of the South and the unity of action of the Group.
