Diaz-Canel evokes battle for the release of the Five

HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 12 (ACN) Miguel Diaz-Canel, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and president of the country, evoked today the battle to achieve the release of the Cuban anti-terrorists unjustly detained in Miami exactly 25 years ago.

On X, the President highlighted the leadership of Fidel and Raul Castro, as well as the protagonism of the Cuban people and international solidarity, to return Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez, known worldwide as The Five, to their country.

After their arrest in 1998, The Five suffered severe sentences in the United States, allegedly for being part of an espionage network in that country, when in reality they were preventing terrorist acts against Cuba.

On June 23, 2001, Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro assured that they would return to their homeland, and as the case became known, the international solidarity movement was strengthened, demanding justice.

"One September 12, 25 years ago, #LosCinco we were arrested. Those blinded by hatred wanted to see us die in prison. But #Fidel promised, and #Raúl delivered: we're back! Thanks to our brothers from #Cuba and the world!", posted today on X Gerardo Hernandez.

On December 17, 2014, as part of a humanitarian agreement reached between the U.S. and Cuban governments, Hernandez was released along with Ramon Labañino and Antonio Guerrero, after Rene Gonzalez and Fernando Gonzalez returned to the country in 2012 and 2014, respectively, having served their sentences.

Once in Cuba, they received the status of Heroes of the Republic and the Playa Giron Order.
