HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 12 (ACN) With the presence of Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and president of the country, a cultural ceremony was held on Monday night to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the military coup in Chile that ended the Popular Unity government and put an end to the life of President Salvador Allende.
Part of the Chilean community living in Cuba, as well as representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited to the island, gathered at the Basilica Menor del Convento San Francisco de Asis, as reported on X, formerly Twitter, the account of the Presidency.
Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, Cuban foreign minister, Alpidio Alonso Grau, minister of culture, Lis Cuesta, the President's wife, and notable Cuban intellectuals were also present.
The gala program included performances by troubadour Silvio Rodriguez, the National Choir of Cuba, conducted by maestro Digna Guerra; flutist Niurka Gonzalez, along with pianist Malva Rodriguez and the Havana Chamber Orchestra, conducted by maestro Daiana Garcia.
The coup d'état in Chile on September 11, 1973 took the life of constitutional president Salvador Allende, overthrew his Popular Unity government and established the Chilean military dictatorship, a dictatorial regime until March 11, 1990.
