Cuban National Assembly reaffirms its support for constitutional principles

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 12 (ACN) The National Assembly of People's Power (Parliament), together with the Party and the Government, will continue achieving victories and will fulfill the constitutional postulate of representing the Cuban people, said today Esteban Lazo Hernandez, president of that legislative body, during the 10th Ordinary Session of the 9th Legislature.

Lazo Hernandez declared that this is the last ordinary session of the National Assembly in its 9th Legislature, after five years of hard work, characterized by the tightening of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the U.S. government, which hinders the development of the country and the welfare of the people.

The President of the Council of State said that during the period Cuba was arbitrarily included in the list of countries sponsoring terrorism and the nation also suffered the effects of COVID-19, a disease that imposed new challenges.

He commented on the unfortunate accidents and natural disasters that deeply affected Cubans in 2022, and the effects of the world economic crisis that have repercussions on material shortages and increased scarcity, inflation, illegalities and manifestations of corruption, in addition to the increase in the migratory flow, mainly among young people and university students.

According to Lazo Hernandez, in the most complex stage of the COVID-19 pandemic, the parliamentarians reaffirmed themselves as leaders of the community, developed their work for the benefit of the interests of the population and maintained the link with their constituents.

This supreme body of State power is structured from the base to the national level and Cuba is the second country with the highest female presence in its Parliament, he continued.

As a result of the municipal elections, he stated, next December 17, the municipal assemblies of the People's Power will be constituted at the same time.

Lazo Hernandez recalled that the Council of State convened the 6th extraordinary session of the National Assembly, in its 9th Legislature, for the afternoon of December 14, on the occasion of the 18th anniversary of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-People's Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP).
