LAS COLORADAS, Granma, Dec 2 (ACN) With a political-cultural act in the monument Portada de la Libertad, in this community of the municipality of Niquero(western Cuba), Cubans of several generations, mostly young people, recalled today the landing of the expeditionaries of the Granma yacht, which took place 66 years ago in the current province of the same name.
The tribute to the 82 members of the expedition that in 1956 brought to Cuba's shores the protagonists of the last stage of the nation's liberation struggle, was led by Commander of the Revolution Guillermo Garcia Frias, who served as a guide to the brave travelers and later became the first peasant to join the newly formed Rebel Army.
Poems, dances and actors' performances evoked the preparations for the voyage and the risky journey from the Mexican port of Tuxpan to the inhospitable site of Los Cayuelos, while emblematic songs such as La Lupe, El Necio and Pequeña Serenata Diurna stirred emotions among those present in the small square, on one side of which the replica of the historic yacht can be seen.
Reaching this sacred place and working to keep alive the legacy of Fidel Castro and his comrades becomes more important every year in the face of the campaigns and aggressions of the enemies who try to undermine the Revolution, said Lisandro del Toro Navea, president of the youth organization at the University of Granma.
He denounced the tightening of the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba, and reaffirmed the commitment of university students as faithful followers of Fidel and Julio Antonio Mella.
Reynaldo Fernandez Rivero, first secretary of the Young Communist League in Granma, recalled the human Fidel, internationalist, capable of materializing dreams; the leader of those 82 expeditionaries who gave birth to the glorious Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR).
He recalled that, since 2016, the date of December 2 holds an even greater significance, because that same day the eastern province received the funeral procession of the Historical Leader of the Revolution, to whom tribute will also be paid tonight with an evening at the Antonio (Ñico) Lopez Park-Museum, in the city of Bayamo, where his ashes were laid to rest, in transit to Santiago de Cuba.
