Cuba urges to avoid climate catastrophe

HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 8 (ACN) Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, Cuban foreign minister, urged today on Twitter to make substantial decisions at the 27th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 27) to avoid the climate catastrophe the world is heading to.

Regarding the COP 27, taking place since Monday in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, the Cuban minister considered that the contribution of developed countries could not be postponed, in accordance with the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities.

Antonio Guterres, secretary general of the United Nations, warned on Monday during the opening of the event that the world is approaching a turning point that will make climate chaos irreversible.

Guterres called on developed and emerging economies to establish a climate solidarity pact, so that all countries make the extra effort to reduce emissions this decade, in line with the target of 1.5 degrees Celsius.

He considered that this agreement should also guarantee that rich countries and international institutions provide financial and technical assistance to help emerging economies accelerate their own transition to renewable energies and put an end to dependence on fossil fuels.

The Cuban delegation to COP 27, led by Elba Rosa Perez Montoya, minister of science, technology and environment, also called on developed nations to assume their commitments to provide means of implementation to the developing world, including financing, technologies and contribution to capacity building.
