HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 6 (ACN) A donation of powdered milk, boxes of gloves and pasta arrived in Cuba on Saturday from Carlos Lazo, Cuban-American professor and activist, who leads the Bridges of Love project, as well as from the pacifist organization Code Pink.
The cargo, received at José Martí International Airport in the capital, will be sent mainly to the population of Pinar del Río affected by Hurricane Ian in September.
According to Lazo, both Code Pink and Bridge of Love arrived in the Caribbean nation to help all those people affected by the scourge of the meteorological event and after the fire at the Supertanqueros Base in Matanzas, which occurred in August.
The professor expressed his desire for the end of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba, which he said harms the families of the archipelago.
Every day there are more Cubans in emigration who notice the criminal nature of that policy, a nightmare of more than 60 years that must be lifted, Lazo said.
He said that the only answer to all the hate campaigns against Cuba and against the project he leads is love, which is visible in the number of people joining the project.
The people of Pinar del Rio, said Leima Martinez, North American director of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, will receive not only the donation, but the affection of both movements in which young people and children have been involved.
Martinez stressed that the initiative demonstrates the possibility of all Cuban-Americans to have normal relations with their homeland and to support it in disaster situations such as those that have occurred recently.
It is an aid full of love and friendship that, although symbolic, contributes to mitigate the millions of dollars in expenses caused by the U.S. blockade to Cuba, said Medea Benjamin, co-founder of Code Pink.
As Americans we are ashamed of the policies of the administration of President Joe Biden, who after the electoral process is expected to improve relations with Cuba, she added.
Bridge of Love is a non-profit organization that organizes solidarity aid to Cuba from the United States and leads, together with other movements, caravans in favor of ending the blockade and strengthening ties between the two nations.
Code Pink is a non-governmental organization based in New York, whose mission is based on demanding the end of wars, militarism and for the sake of social justice.
