Wet period in Cuba begins with positive figures in central region

CAMAGUEY, Cuba, May 16 (ACN) The wet period in Cuba between May and October began with reports of significant rainfall in the province of Camagüey(central Cuba), where 91.4 millimeters (mm) of rains were accumulated during the first 15 days of the current month, although the largest accumulations occurred in the northern region of this geography.

Sierra de Cubitas, Minas, Nuevitas, Sibanicu and Guaimaro, exceeded 100 mm of rainfall, and show better conditions regarding the historical average of the month, however, they are still below, according to records of the network of rain gauges of the Hydraulic Development Company of the territory.

The accumulated year-to-date rainfall represents only 26 % of the total, marked by the severe drought affecting this region, caused by a significant decrease in rains in previous months, which in turn affects the current state of Camagüey's reservoirs, the province with the largest hydraulic infrastructure in the country.

At present, the 54 reservoirs in the territory have accumulated just over 26 % of their total capacity, and 41 of them do not reach half of their total volume, Luis Mane, a specialist in Water Resources Management of the aforementioned entity of the Hydraulic Resources system, told the Cuban News Agency.

According to the forecasts of the Institute of Meteorology on its digital page, May is expected to be a month of rainfall, and consequently, it is usual for rain totals to increase notably compared to previous months, being even very high at times.
