President of Mexico on working visit to Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, May 8 (ACN) Andrés Manuel López Obrador, president of the United Mexican States, arrived this Saturday in Cuba through Havana's José Martí International Airport to begin a working visit.

The visitor was received at the air terminal by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla and members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Havana.

After the reception, Rodríguez Parrilla stated on Twitter that López Obrador's visit confirms the solid and historic ties of brotherhood that unite the two countries.

"With the affection and hospitality of the Cuban people we received President @lopezobrador_. His working visit, which he is making as part of the celebration of 120 years of uninterrupted diplomatic relations, confirms the solid and historic ties of brotherhood that unite #CubaYMexico".

Also on Twitter, President Miguel Díaz-Canel welcomed his Mexican counterpart and highlighted the historic ties of friendship that unite both nations.

López Obrador recently spoke out against the exclusion of Cuba from the preparations for the Summit of the Americas, to be held next June in the U.S. city of Los Angeles.

Cuba receives the Mexican president in a context characterized by the good progress of bilateral ties and close to celebrating 120 years of uninterrupted diplomatic relations.

In the area of medical cooperation, ties date back to November 2007, when this Caribbean nation sent 54 collaborators to assist populations affected by floods in southwestern Mexico.

Solidarity aid was maintained over the years, and between 2020 and 2021 Cuba sent medical brigades made up of a total of 1,479 Cuban collaborators to support the fight against COVID-19 in that territory.

In the education sector, in 1975, the Educational and Cultural Cooperation Agreement was signed between the two countries, as a result of which, to date, 1,544 Mexican students have graduated in Cuba and 462 are currently studying.
