HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 10 (ACN) As every January 10 since 1929, the first thought of the day is for Julio Antonio Mella, Cuban president Miguel Diaz-Canel said today on Twitter, on the occasion of the 93rd anniversary of the assassination of the young revolutionary.
In his message, the president stressed that the student leader is a symbol of the communist youth, who lived and died for the Revolution.
Manuel Marrero, Cuban PM, highlighted on the same social media the deep anti-imperialist thought of this essential symbol of Cuba's history, and pointed out that today and always, Mella lives.
Another tweet by Marrero quotes the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, when he said: "Mella, from the first moment, stood out as an extraordinary revolutionary fighter. The story of this brief, dynamic, combative and profound life is moving!
Roberto Morales Ojeda, secretary of organization and politics of cadres of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, expressed that Mella's legacy is still alive in the will, solidarity, anti-imperialism and commitment of the youth, of the people, in overcoming the challenges and defending the Revolution.
Likewise, the first secretary of the Young Communist Youth League, Aylin Alvarez, recognized Mella's combination of youth and political maturity, his firmness and intellectual capacity.
The Federation of University Students (FEU) called for a tribute to Mella Monday, at the monument that bears his name at the University of Havana, and a bicycle march from that site to the University of Informatics Sciences.
Also, Juventud Rebelde newspaper reported, the FEU's centenary campaign will be re-launched on that date, with the aim of revolutionizing practices, thinking, classrooms and neighborhoods.
Julio Antonio Mella was founder of the FEU and one of the participants in the creation of the first Communist Party of Cuba, in August 1925.
He is considered one of the emblematic personalities of the revolutionary process in Cuba during the first half of the 20th century.
By order of the Cuban dictator Gerardo Machado, on January 10, 1929 he was assassinated in Mexico, at 25.
