Book on the literacy campaign presented today on its 60th anniversary



HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 23 (ACN) The book Evocación de una Hazaña: Historia novelada (Evocation of a Feat: History in a Novel) will be presented today at the University of Havana as a tribute to the end of the Literacy Campaign 60 years ago, when Commander in Chief Fidel Castro declared Cuba a territory free of illiteracy.

Written by Julio Antonio Díaz Abreu, Senior Professor of the School of Tourism of the UH, Evocación… is also dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the proclamation of the Year of Education, according to MSc. Elizabeth Rodríguez Muñiz, Manager of Communication and Marketing of this institution.

Published by Editorial Universitaria and based on selected pages of Díaz Abreu's diary, from April 15 to December 1961, the text includes narrations and graphic testimonies of the 50th Anniversary Havana Literacy Association about its socio-cultural and historical-political activities in this century by way of comparison with their work during the 20th century.

The third year of the Cuban Revolution, 1961, registered events of special significance to the people, who supported the proclamation of the socialist character of the Revolution, took part in the defeat of the mercenary invasion of Bay of Pigs and joined the Literacy Campaign that concluded on December 22, 1961.
