HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 21 (ACN) Thirteen new deputies recently elected to serve in an equal number of vacant seats in the Cuban Parliament were sworn in today for such high responsibility, as they took office in the first minutes of the 8th ordinary period of sessions of the National Assembly of People's Power (Parliament), in its 9th Legislature.
In the presence of Army General Raul Castro, historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, and Miguel Diaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, the ceremony took place, where Esteban Lazo, President of the Parliament, officially declared them deputies.
Lazo pointed out that this is the first face-to-face session of the National Assembly after two years without meeting due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and stressed that it is taking place when the process of rendering account of the constituency delegates to their electors is about to conclude -this week-.
In the midst of the difficult situation caused by the pandemic, the work has been dynamic and systematic, as evidenced by the analysis in the Municipal Assemblies of government of the speeches made by Diaz-Canel at the meeting with the presidents of the Provincial Assemblies of People's Power, and Alejandro Gil, deputy prime minister and head of economy and planning, Lazo explained.
Besides Raul Castro and Diaz-Canel, Jose Ramon Machado Ventura and the Commanders of the Revolution Ramiro Valdes Menendez and Guillermo Garcia Frias are also attending this session of the National Assembly.
The 8th ordinary period of sessions of the Cuban Parliament, in its 9th Legislature, will be held until tomorrow at the Havana Convention Center.
