Eastern Cuba hosts 1st International Conference Faure Chomón Mediavilla In Memoriam

LAS TUNAS, Cuba, Dec 8 (ACN) The love for local and national history and the need to settle a debt with the Commander of the Rebel Army Faure Chomón Mediavilla (1929-2019) is the reason holding today the first international meeting on the life of the underground fighter, diplomat and popular leader.

Hosted by the office of the Union of Cuban Historians and Researchers in the province of Las Tunas, the meeting will discuss more than 20 papers from Sweden, Spain, Mexico, the United States and Cuba about the revolutionary.

The organizing committee, made up of local renowned researchers and historians, referred at a press conference to the need to turn Las Tunas into the main space of tribute to the Commander of the Rebel Army, who was born in this province.

“It is about recognizing the man who was First Secretary of the Cuban Communist Party in Las Tunas back in the 1970s and to whom we owe the socioeconomic and cultural transformations that the province boasts today,” they said. “Chomón’s work earned us the epithet ‘Capital of Cuban Sculpture’ and gave us pre-university schools, a university, a performing arts movement, and our main streets and avenues, among other achievements.”

Many of these memories are collected in a photographic exhibition at the José Martí Provincial Library as part of many activities in honor of the man who was the second in command of the March 13 Revolutionary Directorate on the second anniversary of his decease.
