HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 7 (ACN) Cuban president Miguel Diaz-Canel said today on Twitter that December 7 is a day of heroes in the country, due to the anniversaries of important historical personalities and events.
The president referred to the death in combat of Antonio Maceo (1896), the birth of Frank Pais (1934), the founding of the Association of Combatants of the Cuban Revolution (1993), and Operation Tributo (1989).
He also recalled that on December 7, 1989, the national mourning farewell was held to bury Cuban internationalists who had fallen in military and civilian missions in African lands and other scenarios, as part of Operation Tributo.
Diaz-Canel quoted the words of the historic leader of the Revolution Fidel Castro regarding this tribute: "December 7 will become a day of remembrance for all Cubans who gave their lives not only in defense of their homeland, but also of mankind. #Fidel in #OperacionTributo (7/12/1989)," the tweet read.
The date chosen was precisely the anniversary of the fall in combat of the Lieutenant General of the Liberation Army Antonio Maceo Grajales and his aide, Francisco Gomez Toro.
