HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 1 (ACN) The prestigious Cuban musician Adalberto Alvarez, known as El Caballero del Son, died in this city following complications associated with COVID-19.
The Empresa de Grabaciones y Ediciones Musicales (EGREM) released the news on the social network Twitter and offered condolences to the artist's family and to the people of Cuba.
Adalberto Álvarez Zayas, a composer, writer, arranger, singer and pianist, was born on November 22, 1948. He studied at the National School of Arts (ENA) from 1966 to 1972, and was a professor of Musical Literature at the Provincial School of Arts of the province of Camagüey from 1973 to 1978.
He began his artistic career as a paila player in 1957, and later became arranger and director of his father's band Avance Juvenil.
Álvarez was the founder of two of the most successful Cuban bands of all time: Son 14 and Adalberto Álvarez y su Son.
In 2008 he received the National Music Award.
