Cuban authorities regret shipwreck near U.S. coasts

HAVANA, Cuba, May 31 (ACN) Ernesto Soberon, director general of Consular Affairs and Cubans Residing Abroad of the Cuban foreign ministry, regretted today on Twitter the recent shipwreck that occurred near the U.S. coast, which caused the death of two people, while 10 others are still missing.

The official of the Cuban foreign ministry sent in his message heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the Cuban citizens who died in the tragic accident.

Likewise, Soberon reaffirmed the will of his country's authorities to guarantee a regular, orderly and safe migration, by virtue of the agreements signed.

This Thursday, the U.S. Coast Guard informed via Twitter about the rescue of eight people and two bodies, in a shipwreck near Key West, in Florida.

The survivors, who were trying to reach the U.S. coast from Cuba, indicated that 10 other people were missing after the incident, which occurred on Wednesday.

In this regard, Cuban foreign minister, Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, denounced today that the political decisions of the United States threaten safe, orderly and regular migration.

There was an unjustified interruption in the issuance of visas to Cubans, forcing them to travel to third countries without any guarantee of granting them, and non-compliance with the visa quota established by the Migratory Agreements.

In addition, the Cuban Adjustment Act of 1966 remains in force, which grants Cubans a differentiated and unique treatment throughout the world, by admitting them immediately and automatically, regardless of the ways and means they use, even if they arrive illegally to its territory.

This causes, apart from illegal travel by sea, many Cubans to leave the island legally to different Latin American countries to reach the United States, a journey in which they become victims of traffickers and criminal gangs.
