Cuba makes the most of measures to boost agricultural production

SANCTI SPIRITUS, Cuba, May 25 (ACN) Several of the measures approved by the Cuban government last April to boost agricultural production are already in place in the province of Sancti Spíritus, according to local officials in statements to ACN.

Juan José Nazco González, delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture (MINAG) in the province, referred to a package of 63 approved measures, 30 of them top priority, and of which 13 are already supported by legal regulations.

He highlighted the provisions related to the reduction of the electricity bill that producers must pay for crop irrigation. As to water consumption, the rate enjoyed a 32% reduction in the case of rice production, given the high demand for this item among Cubans and despite the large amount of water needed to grow it.

Irrigation in Cuban agriculture is very depressed, so much so that it’s only used in 7% of the cultivated land.

Nazco Gonzalez also praised the 60% price cut in the case of feed to breed swine, although pork production is yet to meet national demand.

“For one, now producers can contract consumables and machinery with our suppliers,” he remarked. “And it is also possible now to slaughter and market beef, subject to the requirements laid down in the Land and Livestock Control registries and the provision of the state quota of meat and milk, as applicable.”

The specialist from MINAG acknowledged that several producers still harbor doubts regarding the agricultural insurance policies, something he ascribes to their poor knowledge about their provisions.

“We have to explain these decisions well because an insurance policy covers risks such as pests and diseases, extreme weather phenomena such as droughts, heavy rains, hurricanes, floods and fires,” he pointed out.
On a TV appearance, Minister of Finance and Prices Meisi Bolaños Weiss held that all the measures announced in April backdate to January this year.
