Warning: planted forests might get lost to wildfires

HAVANA, Cuba, May 26 (ACN) About 1,500 hectares of planted forests in Cuba have been affected by wildfires so far this year, reported the Cuban Forest Ranger Corps (CGC), attached to the Ministry of the Interior.

These are sensitive losses if we consider that these trees were planted at least 25 years ago, even if they can regenerate or be self-sustainable, according to specialists.

The situation is all the more serious if we add the 2,307 hectares of natural forests burned since the beginning last January of the National Forest Fire Protection Campaign, which finishes on May 31, when the rainy season begins in the country.

This means that 3,763 hectares were destroyed by 355 fires linked to planned crop burnings, the passing of vehicles without spark killers, poaching, and careless smokers.

Therefore, it is essential to increase risk perception regarding these fires, 90% of which are caused by negligence—the remaining 10% splits into arson (1%) and natural (5%), undetermined (2%) and accidental (1%) fires.

In 2020 there were 504 wildfires that burned to the ground 5,343.68 hectares. Cuba relies on a National Strategy and a Program for forest fire management for the period 2018-2025, something rare in today’s world.
